Outside of the world, the second album by Japanese trio Usurabi, is a rare pleasure – a guitar pop album that’s deep with spirit, bristling with energy, melodically rich and precious: full of life. It’s even more thrilling than its predecessor, 2021’s Remains of the Light, also released by An’archives, its eight songs falling together just perfectly. If you’ve ever swooned to the sound of rattling, humming organs on countless ‘60s garage rock sides, the wistful beauty of David Roback and Kendra Smith’s music as Opal, the brittle immediacy of those ‘80s EPs from New Zealand acts like The Clean and The Chills, you’ll find plenty to love here. The line-up’s still the same: the songs are written by Toshimitsu Akiko, previously a member of Doodles and Aminome; playing behind her is drummer Morohashi Shigeki and bass player Kawaguchi Masami, who’d previously played together in Kawaguchi’s legendary Broomdusters, where Kawaguchi really started to establish himself as one of Japan’s greatest rock guitarists. But Usurabi is very much Toshimitsu’s vehicle, a space for her to gift her gorgeous songs to the world, with Kawaguchi and Morohashi helping guide the songs into the light. Indeed, one thing that’s particularly noticeable about Outside of the world is the way all three musicians act in service to what the songs demand. So “Meet again, outside of the world” opens the album with a beautiful ‘60s garage sway, all buzzing organs and Toshimitsu’s beautifully clear voice. “Even if it’s a lie” bristles with energy and tension, its driving rhythms recalling groups like The Feelies, but with Toshimitsu’s surf rock guitar riding the waves. “Pura” is pensive and melancholy, its graceful slow motion dissolving into a free-form section where Kawaguchi and Morohashi drill down into the earth, a fiercely responsive rhythm duo, while waves of coruscating noise guitar soar out into the ether; “Waves” is a stately closer, crushing guitars cossetting a slow, martial rhythm. Recorded over 2021 and 2022, Outside of the world is a more than worthy follow-up to both Remains of the Light and the limited cassette, Further closer, released in 2022 on Kawaguchi’s Purifivia imprint. It has Usurabi stretching out, letting their songs breathe when they need, and tightening the screws on other songs so they become perfect pop statements. There’s plenty of joy and pleasure here, and a gentle but determined melancholy; inviting and beautifully sculpted, Outside of the world is a quiet masterpiece.

Archeus LP Kusōzu : Nine Death Stages

Archeus LP Kusōzu : Nine Death Stages An’archives

[An’39]

May 19th

12″LP black vinyl, comes in a 2 colors silkscreened heavy jacket with obi (black or kraft), inserts and a postcard by Vincent Guilbert. Edition of 350

Printed by Alan Sherry & liner notes by Jon Dale

Kusōzu : Nine Death Stages is the second album by the Tokyo trio Archeus, which consists of Keiko Higuchi (voice, percussion, trombone, shamisen), Shizuo Uchida (bass strings), and TOMO (hurdy gurdy, voice). It follows their debut, self-titled and self-released CD and cassette from 2021 and is further proof – if any were needed – that these musicians, who’ve known each other for some time, but only started playing together relatively recently, share a telepathic communication, improvising together, fully in the moment, and as one. Where their debut album featured four extended improvisations, Kusōzu is an object lesson in economy and clarity – nine tracks, thirty-three minutes, everything that needs be said and nothing more.

All three musicians are incredibly active in the Japanese underground. Higuchi currently plays with Sachiko in Albedo Fantastica, adding Uchida for Albedo Gravitas; Uchida and Higuchi team up with Masami Kawaguchi (guitar) in vDBG. She’s also recorded with improvisers such as Naoto Yamagishi, Yasumune Morishige, and Shin-Ichiro Kanda. Uchida is also a member of MAI MAO, Kito-Mizukumi Rouber, Hasegawa-Shizuo, UH, and TERROR SHIT, and he’s recently recorded with improvising guitarist Takashi Masubuchi; TOMO has previously been a member of Tetragrammaton and Pouring High Water, and has recently performed live with Mick of Kousokuya, Mitsuru Tabata, Keiji Haino, and Daisuke Takaoka.

While Higuchi and Uchida have been making music together for some time now, they appear careful not to impose their previously articulated lexicon to bear on Archeus. There are trace elements of their playerly voices still present – the stretchy, plastic scrabbling on bass strings from Uchida; Higuchi’s murmurations of tone, and sudden plunges back down to earth, vertiginous and woozy – but there are other things going on here, particularly with TOMO joining in the action. His hurdy gurdy is a wild card in a group of wild cards, here cranking out burred, purring drones, there fidgeting through floods of notes, cranked up really high, ducking and weaving between Higuchi and Uchida as the three pursue the eternal now that is core to the best improvised music.

Archeus seem to work alchemically, transmuting their base matter into gold. Named after the Buddhist art practice of kusōzu, the graphic painting of nine stages of a decaying corpse in the open air, “to demonstrate the effects of impermanence,” as scholar Gail Chin once wrote,

Kusōzu : Nine Death Stages is Archeus at their most rigorously attentive to each other’s playing, and by the end, the music is itself thinking and feeling.

Incapacitants Repo Box

Incapacitants Repo Box LP + 2 tapes + inserts – Urashima

Released in a beautiful limited edition of 99 copies, fully remastered for this vinyl edition by Lasse Marhaug ** The roots of noise can be traced back to the experimental works of composers like Luigi Russolo, who in the early 20th century introduced the concept of noise machines or “Intonarumori” and advocated for the inclusion of industrial and mechanical sounds in music. This laid the foundation for the exploration of unconventional and non-musical sounds as viable artistic expressions. In the 1980s, noise music gained significant recognition and prominence with the emergence of artists and projects like MerzbowWhitehouse, and, of course, Incapacitants. These artists employed a wide range of techniques and sound sources, including electronics, feedback, tape manipulation, and found objects, to create intense and immersive sonic experiences.
Incapacitants has made an indelible mark on the noise genre with their relentless pursuit of sonic experimentation. Through their innovative use of electronics, amplification, and feedback, they have created a distinct and recognizable sonic signature. Their performances and recordings often encompass a vast range of frequencies and textures, immersing the listener in a dense and immersive sonic landscape. Repo, the enthralling album by the Japanese experimental project Incapacitants, is a sonic masterpiece that pushes the boundaries of noise music to exhilarating heights. Originally released on vinyl in just 300 copies by Japan’s legendary Alchemy Records label in 1989, this record showcases the immense creativity and technical prowess of the man behind Incapacitants, Toshiji Mikawa, here still alone (Repo is the last album as a one-man project, as Fumio Kosakai, about two years later after this release, became a permanent member to make Incapacitants a duo). With its relentless cacophony and innovative soundscapes, Repo is a testament to the enduring power of noise as an art form.
From the very first seconds, Repo grabs your attention with an onslaught of piercing high frequencies and distorted textures. Mikawa’s ability to manipulate sound is immediately apparent as they create a disorienting and immersive atmosphere. The side A evolves, incorporating layers of chaotic noise, visceral feedback, and unexpected sonic surprises, leaving the listener captivated and intrigued. The other side explore the concept of rhythm within noise music, defying conventions and embracing experimentation. The pulsating beats and distorted tones create a captivating sense of momentum, while unexpected disruptions and bursts of dissonance add an element of unpredictability. The juxtaposition of rhythmic elements and abrasive noise creates a dynamic listening experience that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. Repo is an extraordinary album that drives the limits of noise music, showcasing Toshiji Mikawa mastery of sound manipulation and their unwavering dedication to experimentation. He demonstrates an incredible ability to create immersive and captivating sonic landscapes that challenge the listener’s perception of what music can be. With its relentless energy and daring sonic exploration, Repo is a testament to the enduring power of noise as an art form, and a must-listen for anyone seeking an audacious and boundary-pushing musical experience.
“In a historical perspective Repo is also special. There were very few noise records that sounded like it in 1989. Albums by other Japanese artists like Hanatarash, Merzbow, Gerogerigegege and Hijokaidan, who despite the more sonic approach of noise to their western contemporaries, all featured more stylistic aspects to their work – tape loops, collage techniques, the use/abuse of conventional instruments, satirical takes on popular music, references to visual art forms. Repo has none of that, it is full-on noise. In this sense this album – and Incapacitants’ overall oeuvre – has stood the test of time incredibly well. It does not feel dated.” – from Lasse Marhaug new liner notes.

Juke / 19 LPs

Juke/19 or Juke or 19 was a Japanese underground conceptual band, found in 1978 by the artist and painter Shinro Ohtake. An active phase of the project only lasted for about two years, with four LP albums released from December 1980 to September 1982. In a certain sense, Juke/19 pioneered and preceded the unique highly energetic (but sonically sophisticated) experimental/punk style, later developed by such bands like Boredoms. We only have a very few copies of each title.

Juke / 19 – Enban

Originally released in 1980 in response to “NO NEW YORK”, this work was performed and recorded by Shinro Otake, Takuji Nomoto, Toyama Toshiaki, and Yoko Ota in 1978-80 without having a meeting ! The strange sound that swallows noise, junk, rock, punk, etc. is just strange and unexpected . It also reminds Throbbing Gristle and LAFMS . The shortness of each song seems to make the raw and distorted sound and sometims with a light touch of pop. It contains 4 songs and includes liner notes by Manabu Yuasa. Mastered by Taku Unami. Comes in a special vinyl cover packaging.

John Krausbauer – Alan Licht – Patrick Shiroishi

JohnKrausbauer + Alan Licht 7′ Superstizione / Lateral Tracer – Carbon records

Alan Licht (electric guitar) and John Krausbauer (amplified violin/oscillators) have created two compositions on their new 7” that seemingly reside on opposite ends of the experimental/free-noise spectrum.

Superstizione (Italian for “superstition”) is a maximalist free-noise blast, seemingly chaotic, but with an intentional forward movement and flow. Licht’s guitar playing starts off with a low end, thick fuzz, but quickly moves to an over-blown, frenetic pattern, all while Krausbauer’s amplified violin proves the instrument can fit, and compete comfortably, in the mix of wild amp’d riffage. You can try to discern the notes, examine the interplay, or you can just let yourself be enveloped by the combined waterfall of tones and power.

On the other side of the coin (and record), Lateral Tracer utilizes guitar (Licht) and oscillators (Krausbauer) to create drones and moiré-like patterns with interweaving signals, which elicits difference tones and interference beats, mesmerizing the listener with a soothing heartbeat. Similar to the use of the contrasting red and blue in the cover artwork, creating a chromostereopsis effect, the two sources of sound trade places back and forth, per the listener’s focus, one sound (or color) retreating, while the other advances, and vice-versa.

John Krausbauer + Patrick Shiroishi 7′ High Life – Carbon records

High Life is like a mini-album, a short journey or guide. The perfect use of the 7″ format, showcasing the range of this inventive duo with each playing their core instruments of violin (Krausbauer) and saxophone (Shiroishi), along with some organ drones and singing.

On the a-side, Bird’s Song starts things off with John’s beautiful pulsing organ swells, while Patrick comes in blustering and quick with a cacophony of notes. The world is waking up. They then set off traversing the dynamic range of the free-improv landscape on the title track High Life, with sharp interplay between the droning and soaring violin and skipping free-sax melodies.

On the b-side, the trek continues with Swing Low, as John’s grinding Conrad-esque violin drones lay a base for Patrick’s track-long skronking sax solo. They finish off the trip, and the 7″, with the raga meditations of Tuning In & Turning On, all chanting voices and organ drone; the world lays its head down.

Sweet and introspective lo-fi avant folk from Osaka and originally released in late 1999, this is considered to be a monumental and yet very mysterious relic: virtually nothing is known about Tobari outside of these minimal recordings and the few photos that accompany them.
