DUB-HEI & NEW CHANELL + JUKE/19. 2CD boxset Live rec. at TAD 2023.9.18 – Flying Saucer
This two-CD set captures the performance of “Dub-Hei & New Chanel + JUKE/19.”, which took place at the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art on the final day of the “Shinro Ohtake” exhibition’s touring tour, which began at the National Museum of Modern Art in 2022.
“Dub-Hei & New Chanel” is both an art piece, composed of multiple collages on a three-dimensional stage-like structure, and a musical performance device, with guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, and turntables all remotely controlled to function and perform like a band. The entire stage is transformed into a stunning sound system, a gigantic work of art. Previously, this system featured ∈Y∋ (BOREDOMS) performing with Destroy All Monsters, and his collaboration with Kazuhisa Uchihashi was also released as the CD “Uchidub.”
During the recorded performance, Toshiaki Toyama, a close friend who had been with Shinro Ohtake since the early ’80s in JUKE/19., brought a set of modified instruments he had made himself and intruded into Dub Hei & New Chanel’s performance. The resulting performance plunged into a sonic world like a black hole, swallowing everything up, something never before possible with Dub Hei & New Chanel alone. It was a powerful performance that seemed to condense the history of Ohtake’s music, beginning with JUKE/19., into a mass of sound saturated with industrial textures, complemented by Shinro Ohtake’s performance, creating a chaotic soundscape and an overwhelming acoustic space.
